The West Indies had no answer to left-arm swing bowler Parnell as the 19-year-old returned figures of 4-0-13-4, after having had figures of four for four at one stage, as South Africa, who had scored 183 for seven, held their opponents to 163 for nine.
Opening bowler Parnell began the Windies slide as his first two overs yielded figures of 2-0-3-2 to reduce the batting side to 13 for two inside four overs after Parnell bowled Andre Fletcher before having Chris Gayle caught at midwicket.
An astonishing assault from the right-handed Lendl Simmons then looked have got the West Indies back into the match.
The 22-year-old Simmons, nephew of former West Indian all-rounder Phil Simmons, smashed his was to his first international T20 half-century off 31 balls before making his way to 77 runs off 50 balls with 12 fours and a six.
Unfortunately for the West Indies Simmons did not receive enough support form his team-mates with the next highest score being 19 from Dwayne Bravo.
Simmons eventually perished in the search for quick runs when he lofted a delivery from left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe to AB de Villiers at a wide long-on.
Simmons was the fifth wicket to fall, with his team on 133 for five after 16 overs, before Parnell returned to the bowling attack to remove any hope that the West Indies had of overhauling South Africa’s total.
In the 18th over of the innings Parnell had Kieron Pollard caught at cover before he bowled Jerome Taylor to complete his four wicket haul.
Van der Merwe and fast bowler Dale Steyn provided good support for Parnell as both bowlers captured two wickets.
Earlier, Herschelle Gibbs struck his third T20 international half-century to help South Africa to their final total.
Gibbs bashed his way to 55 runs off 35 balls with eight fours and one six before he lifted a delivery from seamer Pollard to Taylor at mid-on.
The West Indies won the toss and elected to field on a good batting pitch with a lightning fast outfield and South Africa made a superb start to their innings as Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith (31) plundered 54 runs off 35 balls for the first wicket before Smith was caught at backward point off the bowling of left-arm spinner Suleiman Benn.
Gibbs and Kallis continued the good work as their second-wicket partnership realised 51 runs off 36 balls before Kallis was caught at long-on by Pollard off the bowling of seamer Simmons for a sparkling 45 runs off 31 balls.
Gibbs’s departure saw South Africa lose their way a touch with fast bowler Taylor taking three wickets as South Africa lost five wickets for 30 runs to stutter to 166 for seven before Mark Boucher scored a quick 17 not out off 12 balls to give the innings some late impetus.
Taylor bowled with impressive control to capture three for 30 off four overs. Teams: South Africa - Graeme Smith (capt), Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Mark Boucher (wk), Albie Morkel, Roelof van der Merwe, Johan Botha, Wayne Parnell, Dale Steyn.
